Painted Steel and Llaima Volcanic Lava Stone

Suspended Magma explores the transformative forces that shape the Earth’s landscape through a dialogue between movement and permanence, tension and balance. Formed from a sweeping ribbon of painted steel that rises and curls into itself, the sculpture appears to defy gravity, delicately supporting a fragment of volcanic lava within its embrace.

The fluidity of the steel evokes the motion of molten magma as it emerges from the depths of the Earth, while the lava stone serves as a powerful reminder of the material’s final transformation. What was once a torrent of incandescent rock, capable of overwhelming everything in its path, now rests in a state of equilibrium, suspended in time.

The sculpture draws its form from volcanoes and their cyclical nature—forces of destruction that simultaneously become agents of renewal. The rough, porous texture of the lava contrasts with the smooth, reflective surface of the steel, creating a visual and conceptual dialogue between raw geological processes and human intervention.

In Suspended Magma, the volcanic stone becomes both witness and protagonist of this cycle of destruction and regeneration. Held within a continuous steel curve, it symbolizes the moment at which violent energy is transformed into matter, and devastation gives way to renewal. The work reflects on the resilience of nature and the paradox that some of the greatest acts of creation emerge from forces capable of profound destruction.
